| Dallas Morning News, The (TX) - December 13, 2002 COLWELL, WINSTON APPERSON Feb. 28, 1913 - Dec. 11, 2002 Winston Apperson Colwell was born Feb 28, 1913 to Maud and William Colwell in Dallas, Texas. Mr. CoIwell graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1932, and was a star runner on the track team that won the Texas Interscholastic State Championship in that year. Mr. Colwell was awarded a track scholarship to Terrill Prep School in Dallas, where he gained such attention as a runner that he was later awarded a track scholarship to SMU, and won many honors for himself and his team. He graduated from SMU in 1936 with a BSCE Degree, and began his life-long career as a Commercial General Contractor in the Dallas area. In 1940, Mr. Colwell married his beloved wife, Louise Weaver Colwell, and had a son, John McKenna Colwell. Their marriage endured for 59 years, until Mrs. Colwell's death in 1999. When WWII came, Mr. Colwell, already successful in the building industry, offered his knowledge and experience to his Country. He joined the U.S. Navy as a SeaBee and was given the rank of Command Chief Petty Officer, and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre, building "the airfields the Marines landed on." He was Honorably Discharged in 1945 with several Navy Commendations. After the War, Mr. Colwell returned to Dallas and spent the next forty years pursuing His "favorite hobby".... his career. Ms. Colwell's buildings, such as the Primate House at the Dallas Zoo and the Mrs. Bairds Bread Company have been seen and appreciated by thousands for many years. Mr. Colwell's proudest achievement over the years, however, was the design and construction of over fifty different Churches in the area. After his retirement from the construction industry, Mr. Colwell turned his talent for drawing and illustration to the world of fine art. After studying with Dr. Shohar and others, Mr. Colwell became an accomplished artist specializing in Western art. His oil paintings are hanging in the Southwest Art Gallery, the D'Art Gallery, The Southwestern Museum of Art in Oklahoma City and the offices of the Dean of Students at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Mr. CoIwell was also named the official public relations representative for D'Art Gallery, whose job it was to meet and greet visiting world renowned artists who came to Dallas for exhibitions. Mr. Colwell spent many wonderful hours showing these artists around Dallas. Mr. ColwelI was not only proud of his native Dallas, but also of his Texas heritage. He was a descendant of the Appersons and the Weatherfords, who came to Texas in 1836 to fight for Texas Independence and then settled here. In fact, when asked how long he had been in Texas, Mr. Colwell would reply with a gleam in his eye, "Ever since the War of Independence from Mexico!" Mr. Colwell was a member of the Associated General Contractors; D'Art Galleries; Sertoma international, where he held several offices, including President, and he and his wife were founding parishioners of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Dallas. Mr. Colwell is survived by his son, John McKenna CoIwell; daughter-in-law Regina Robinson Colwell; grandson Ian McKenna Colwell; sisters Dorothy Colwell Trainer and Elizabeth Colwell Kadane, and many nephews, nieces and extended family. Special thanks are extended to Caregivers Betty Williams, CNA, Ollie Griggs, CNA, Jackie Brown, and VistaCare Hospice whose help and compassion will never be forgotten.
