Obit Tradition says that, as a young man, Samuel traveled to Louisiana from Tennessee and married a young French girl. This young wife is suppose to have died while giving birth to a daughter who also died. It is known that Samuel was a widower when he arrived in the Nacogdoches Municipality on August 30, 1830. He received a land grant on December 14, 1850 of 1,416 acres in an area now encompassed by Angelina County, Texas.
